The method of making Japanese swords dates back about 3000 years, with a shift from bronze to steel occurring 1200 years ago. The steel-making process in Japan was influenced by the country’s geology, as it lacked sedimentary iron oxides. The Japanese developed a method to extract iron from sand, which provided a high-quality source for steel production.
