The Vredefort impact in South Africa, caused by a massive 25 km-wide asteroid, is the largest known impact structure on Earth, originally spanning 280 km. This event occurred about 2 billion years ago, long before the dinosaurs, and left a crater much larger than the one from the asteroid that killed the non-avian dinosaurs.
