Take a Break: Here’s a Look-Back at the 2021 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards

Yes, it’s 2022. It’s been a month since the start of the new year, and already people are feeling that so much time has passed and so much has happened. With the pandemic still looming over our heads, and with all the news of the world hounding our smartphone and television screens, I feel like it’s time to take a small step back and appreciate what we may have missed back in 2021.

In particular, I’m here to take you through a “digital safari,” if you will. But this is no mere trip to the nearest wildlife reserve, mind you—we’re here to remember a time when nature, when captured at just the right moment, had a pretty colorful sense of humor.

That’s right—we’re taking a look back at the recently-concluded 2021 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards. The now-famous photography competition, born from a “passion for wildlife” rooted in its co-founders Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam, aims to highlight what we need to do to conserve what’s left of our beautiful planet by showcasing its inhabitants in moments that are, really, less “beautiful” and more “hilarious.”

Last year’s winner was “Ouch!”, taken by Ken Jensen. The photo showcases a golden silk monkey from Yunnan, China while it was caught in what appears to be a truly inopportune time. © Ken Jensen / Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards 2021.

Last year, the competition chose to support Save Wild Orangutans, an organization that aims to protect Indonesia’s orangutans through the Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program. Around 10% of all revenues generated by the competition were donated to the organization.

Well, I’m not going to keep you here for long; take a step back to November 2021, and see what “natural comedy” truly means in the gallery below.

Right now, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards is available for exhibiting and sponsorships. Just like the awards themselves, part of the proceeds will also go to charitable causes through organizations like Save Wild Orangutans. Feel free to read further about exhibiting and sponsorships here.

Right then, see you all back here by late November for this year’s Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards! The submission of entries for this year’s awards will begin by Spring 2022, for those that are interested.
