Study Shows Promising Results In Analyzing Pipeline Accidents Using “Petri Nets”

Pipeline accidents can have devastating consequences, from environmental damage to loss of life. In response to such incidents, a National Environmental Council (Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente, CONAMA) resolution has created an emergency plan to help mitigate the effects. Now, a team of researchers has used Petri net modeling to analyze the emergency plan and identify potential bottlenecks and critical stages of the process.

Petri nets are a mathematical tool that models systems with discrete events and transitions, such as the steps in an emergency response plan. The researchers used a software tool called PIPE to simulate the Petri net model and identify key characteristics of the emergency plan. Using Petri net modeling in the described situation allowed the researchers to identify the crucial points of the emergency plan and analyze it broadly, identifying its main points of activity.

The simulation results were promising, as the researchers found that the system modeled from the emergency plan was fluid and lively, without any abnormal concentration in places. This means the Petri net model could accurately describe the process steps and characteristics in detail. This information could improve the plan and make it more effective in responding to pipeline accidents.

The researchers believe that this Petri net model could serve as a basis for future implementation of an algorithm for simulation study and automation project design in this area.
