The fossil record is a deeply biased and incomplete story of ancient life. Most organisms that ever lived left no trace, creating a massive puzzle for paleontologists. Researchers are now looking beyond the bones, using everything from fossil footprints to the behavior of modern scavengers and mathematical models to reveal the vast ecosystems hidden in the gaps of geological time.
