Avalanches are caused by the breaking of crystalline bonds between snow crystals due to gravity. They can be triggered by skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers in the backcountry. Avalanche prevention measures include avalanche control work, the use of avalanche beacons, and avalanche airbags.
