The glasses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/facebook-unveils-its-first-smart-glasses-2021-09-09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which first launched in 2021<\/a>, are a collaboration between <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/facebooks-rebranding-is-anything-but-meta-172465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta<\/a> and Italian-French eyewear company EssilorLuxottica, which owns Ray-Ban among many other brands.<\/p>\n\n<p>The smart glasses feature two small cameras, open-ear speakers, a microphone and a touch panel built into the temple of the glasses. To access these features, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/help\/smart-glasses\/articles\/ray-ban-meta\/pair-unpair-ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">users must pair them to their mobile phone using the Meta View app<\/a>. Users can take photos or videos with the camera, listen to music from their phone and livestream to Meta\u2019s social media platforms. <\/p>\n\n<p>Users can operate the glasses using spoken commands or the built-in Meta AI assistant, which responds to prompts like \u201chey Meta.\u201d For example, users can say, \u201chey Meta, look and\u2026\u201d followed by questions about their surroundings.<\/p>\n\n<p>To take a photo or video, users press and hold a button on the frame, which activates an LED in the front of the glasses. The LED <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/13\/technology\/personaltech\/meta-ray-ban-glasses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signals to others that the camera is actively capturing a photo or video<\/a>. When it comes to user data, folks are rightly concerned about how their images \u2014 potentially captured without their consent \u2014 might be used by the company.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Meta smart glasses add another layer to this debate by introducing AI into the equation. AI has already prompted numerous debates and criticism about <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/d41586-019-03013-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how easy it is to decieve<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/chatgpts-greatest-achievement-might-just-be-its-ability-to-trick-us-into-thinking-that-its-honest-202694\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how confidently it gives incorrect information<\/a> and how <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/racial-bias-found-in-algorithms-that-determine-health-care-for-millions-of-patients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racially biased it can be<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When users take photos or videos with the smart glasses, they are sent to Meta\u2019s cloud to be processed via AI. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/help\/smart-glasses\/articles\/voice-controls\/ask-meta-ai-about-what-you-see-ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Meta\u2019s own website<\/a>, \u201call photos processed with AI are stored and used to improve Meta products, and will be used to train Meta\u2019s AI with help from trained reviewers.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n<p>Meta states this processing includes the analysis of objects, text and other contents of photos, and that any information \u201cwill be collected, used and retained in accordance with Meta\u2019s Privacy Policy.\u201d In other words, images uploaded to the cloud will be used to train Meta\u2019s AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"leaving-it-up-to-users\">Leaving it up to users<\/h2>\n\n<p>The ubiquity of portable digital cameras, including wearable ones, has had a significant impact on how we document our lives while also reigniting legal and ethical debates around privacy and surveillance. <\/p>\n\n<p>In many Canadian jurisdictions, people can be photographed in a public place without their consent, unless there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.priv.gc.ca\/en\/privacy-topics\/surveillance\/video-surveillance-by-businesses\/02_05_d_39_prov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restrictions apply<\/a> if the images are used for commercial purposes or in a way that could cause harm or distress. There are exceptions for journalistic purposes or matters of public interest, but these can be nuanced.<\/p>\n\n<p>Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/about.meta.com\/ray-ban-stories-privacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has published a set of best practices<\/a> to encourage users to be mindful of the rights of others when wearing the glasses. These guidelines suggest formally announcing when you plan to use the camera or livestream, and turning the device off when entering private spaces, such as a doctor\u2019s office or public washrooms.<\/p>\n\n<p>As someone who owns a pair, I can ask my Ray-Ban Meta glasses to comment on what I can see and it will describe buildings, translate signs and accurately guess the species of my mixed-breed dog, but will let me know that it is not allowed to tell me anything about people whenever a person appears in frame. <\/p>\n\n<p>What remains unclear is the issue of bystander consent and how people who appear unintentionally in the background of someone else\u2019s photos will be used by Meta for AI training purposes. As AI capabilities evolve and these technologies become more widespread, these concerns are likely to grow.<\/p>\n\n<p>Meta\u2019s reliance on user behaviour to uphold privacy norms may not be sufficient to address the complex questions surrounding consent, surveillance and data exploitation. Given the company\u2019s track record with privacy concerns and its data-driven business model, it\u2019s fair to question whether the current safeguards are enough to protect privacy in our increasingly digitized world still.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
