You\u2019re settling in on the couch for a sick day. Then you reach for the snacks. <\/p>\n\n<p>When you\u2019re sick, your appetite often decreases. So why, at other times, do you crave sugary treats and carbohydrate-loaded comfort foods?<\/p>\n\n<p>A food <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28375878\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">craving<\/a> goes beyond a mere desire to eat, it encompasses a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7399671\/#CR1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complex mix<\/a> of emotional, behavioural, cognitive and physiological processes. For a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/12\/4\/1181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">well-functioning immune system<\/a>, aim for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/healthy-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">balanced intake<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31267783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fruits, vegetables<\/a>, fibre, protein, and low-glycaemic carbohydrates.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"the-stress-response\">The stress response<\/h2>\n\n<p>Being sick is stressful for the body. Acute mild or intense stress, like we\u2019d see if we\u2019re sick, boosts the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5921333\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flight or fight<\/a>\u201d hormones adrenaline and cortisol. This mobilises stored energy to meet increased demands, but it can also curb appetite. <\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31125634\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prolonged stress<\/a> can disrupt energy balance, and cause nutritional deficiencies and alterations in gut and brain functions. This can reduce a person\u2019s threshold for craving sugar and salt, increasing their preferences towards energy-dense foods.<\/p>\n\n<p>The stress hormone cortisol can also increase your <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24123563\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preference<\/a> for high-calorie, comfort foods, which can <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36615866\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporarily alleviate stress<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-brains-reward-system\">The brain\u2019s reward system<\/h2>\n\n<p>Comfort foods trigger your brain\u2019s reward system, releasing feel-good neurotransmitters like <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30595479\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dopamine<\/a> and serotonin. <\/p>\n\n<p>But \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30951762\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sugar rushes<\/a>\u201d are often short-lived and can lead to decreased alertness and heightened fatigue within an hour of consumption. <\/p>\n\n<p>The link between carbohydrates (which the body converts to sugar) and serotonin can be traced back to 1971 when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.174.4013.1023?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori:rid:crossref.org&amp;rfr_dat=cr_pub%20%200pubmed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">researchers<\/a> found elevated tryptophan levels (serotonin\u2019s precursor) in rats\u2019 plasma and brains after a carbohydrate-rich diet. <\/p>\n\n<p>Subsequent studies in humans established connections between carbohydrates and mood, especially in relation to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2903717\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obesity, depression and seasonal affective disorder<\/a>. The vast microbial population in our gut exerts a potent influence on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8106557\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immunity, metabolism<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8293578\/pdf\/40168_2021_Article_1093.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appetite<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n<p>Recent mouse studies have even identified specific microbes linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/fulltext\/S0960-9822(22)01750-X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sugar binges after antibiotic treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"some-people-eat-less-when-theyre-sick\">Some people eat less when they\u2019re sick<\/h2>\n\n<p>Not everyone craves sugar and carbs when they are sick. Some people eat less for a few reasons:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><p>they have less of an appetite. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5610818\/pdf\/JDR2017-4527980.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ghrelin<\/a> (the \u201chunger\u201d hormone) levels might initially rise, prolonged illness can suppress appetite due to nausea, fatigue and discomfort. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5921333\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Critically ill<\/a> patients have reduced food intake and are at risk of malnutrition<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30777142\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metabolic adaptation<\/a>. The body might slow specific metabolic processes to conserve energy, reducing overall calorie requirements<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>altered taste perception. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32195512\/#:%7E:text=The%20ability%20of%20an%20individual%20to%20perceive%20tastes,intake%2C%20playing%20an%20important%20role%20in%20promoting%20satiation%2Fsatiety.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taste<\/a> is an important component that affects both appetite and energy intake. Alterations in taste and smell is a common symptom when we are sick and was common with <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1101\/2020.04.05.20048421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID<\/a><\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>consuming fluids like water, tea or broths might be more appealing and manageable than solid foods.
