On July 9th, 1962, the United States conducted the Starfish Prime test, a thermonuclear detonation in outer space 400km above a small atoll in the Marshall Islands. The test resulted in a series of unexpected and devastating consequences, including the creation of a new radiation belt and the destruction of a significant number of low Earth orbit satellites.
