A recently-discovered group of fossils, dating back almost a billion years, revealed a once-thriving microbial ecosystem of prokaryotic bacteria and eukaryotic algae living together in harmony. The preservation of this ecosystem challenges our understanding of the evolution of animals and geologic time.
